What is an AI visibility report?
Basically, it's a structured audit that answers one question: when a customer asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Perplexity for a business like yours, do you show up? And if not, what specifically do you fix first.
What it measures, in three questions.
Every credible AI visibility report answers the same three questions (the framing comes from measurement platforms like Peec.ai, and it holds up):
- Visibility - are you named at all when a customer asks?
- Position - if you're named, how prominently? First pick, or an afterthought at the end?
- Sentiment - is the description accurate and flattering, or vague and slightly wrong?
A good report doesn't stop at three numbers though. It tells you why you scored what you scored, and hands you a fix list in the order most likely to actually move you up. If you'd rather run the audit yourself first, start with our AI search audit checklist.
Four sections you should expect.
- Third-party visibility. Here's the thing most owners don't expect: AI assistants overwhelmingly cite review sites, directories, listicles, and local press, not your homepage. A proper report maps where you're cited and where you're missing.
- AI crawler access. Can GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended actually reach and read your site? Or are they hitting a blocked
robots.txtor an empty JavaScript shell? (Happens more often than you'd think.) - Content structure. Do your pages answer real customer questions in the first two lines, phrased the way customers actually ask them?
- Entity and business data. Does your name, address, phone, categories, and hours match across every source AI stitches together to figure out who you are? Inconsistency here quietly kills you.
Testing with the questions customers actually ask.
The difference between a real AI visibility report and a generic SEO tick-list is live testing. A good report takes a set of tailored customer questions (we call them Golden Queries) and runs them against ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Multiple times each, because AI answers vary between runs and a single run is basically noise.
What you should end up with: an appearance rate, a list of the competitors AI keeps recommending instead of you, and the sources those recommendations cite. That last one is often the single biggest lever for a local business.
